Who we are and our routine I am a teacher who will be starting a new job as Head of Religious Education in a secondary school very locally to our home in September. I will be working 4 days a week with Wednesdays off work, and I will also be starting a Masters degree in Comparative Education at UCL in London in September too. I need someone in the home to offer me flexibility of child care and to help with the housekeeping. Generally we eat our main meal in the evening at about 6pm. You will be expected to eat with us as a family. The children are generally asleep by 9pm, earlier in the winter. You will not be responsible for the mornings at all, although we will all be out of the house by 7.45am. On Saturday mornings the kids have a lie in and things are much more relaxed until Libby has her karate class at 10am. The children are extremely intelligent. They can both read very fluently and love books. Libby (19.06.2009) is now 8 and enjoys karate and playing the drums and violin. Alix (Alexander) (5.1.2011) is 6 and enjoys ball games, especially tennis and badminton. Whilst Libby is popular at school and has a number of friends, Alix is more of a loner. He dislikes children his own age and can be stubborn if he doesn’t get his own way (which of course means do not give him his own way!). They are both very big for their age. As a family, we love rollercoasters and funfairs, days out at the seaside, playing in our garden (which is quite large), walking round the fields and woods around our house, going to the theatre, reading, watching cartoons on my laptop (we don’t have a
Your characteristics - Tolerant, patient, kind, with a sense of humour; easy going and relaxed - You realise you will have to earn the trust and respect of the children which will take time and patience - You have experience of looking after children who are not in your own family and can reflect maturely on your experiences - At least intermediate and improving standard of spoken and written English - You are able to use your initiative when working with children and don’t need to be told exactly what to do all the time - You are 100% willing to commit to staying with us until the end of July 2018: having a series of au pairs is disruptive and damaging to the children and I want to avoid this - You are adaptive to new situations and will be able to start looking after the children without me there within three days of your arrival - You genuinely enjoy the company of children and want to play with them and help them develop and grow Benefits of the job - £80 a week pocket money - Single room in our home rent free (worth £400 a month if I were to rent it out to a non-au pair) - All food; bills including wifi - Paid holidays: 1 week October, 1 week February, 1 week May, 2 weeks Christmas, 2 weeks Easter (to coincide with school holidays when I’m not working so don’t need childcare). You’re welcome to stay in the family home at these times. If you do and we go on holiday you will be welcome to join us at my expense - The opportunity to be part of our family and all activities - Quiet, safe, beautiful rural location; 20 minutes walk to a shop and the local swimming pool. 1 hour walk (maximum 10 minute taxi drive) to Luton airport. 1 hour walk to Luton town centre (there is also a bus and a taxi costs about £5). Express trains go from Luton train stations to Kings Cross in central London in 20 minutes.
