We are Lorna (39) Jason (40) and we have 3 children, Lucy (9), William (7) and Katherine (2). We also have a dog George. We live in a village in North Yorkshire between Leeds and York with excellent train services to both cities. We live in a Victorian house and have a big garden. The au pair's bedroom is large with king size bed and you have your own bathroom. Of course there is access to wi fi, and there is a television. The village we live in is rural and great for walking, cycling and running. Trains to York take 10 minutes and trains to Leeds approximately 20 minutes. Both cities offer excellent restaurants, gym, pubs/clubs and shopping opportunities. Our previous au pair had a good social network as there are several au pairs working in York and there is ample time to meet during the day. York University runs courses in English targeted for foreign students. We are looking for someone who is outgoing, organised and fun. Ensuring the children are safe and being interested in what they do is also really important.
Duties include taking Lucy and William to and from school. This is a 10 minute train ride to York, followed by a short walk to their school. In the morning you need to get up and help set out breakfast for Lucy and Will. Once you return, George (who is a black labrador) needs a walk for up to 1 hour. From 10.30-15.50 you are more or less free to do what you like. I do expect some help with loading and unloading washing machine/tumble dryer and generally keeping things a bit tidy. In the afternoon you pick up the children from school and depending on school clubs catch the 1700 train. You will have to help the children get some light tea and make sure their uniforms are put away. Essentially you work on average 5 hours a day mon-fri and we pay £80 per week. As we are both doctors, sometimes you may also need to walk up to the village nursery to get Kate and give her a light tea too if we both happen to have on call commitments, which is fairly infrequent. With our jobs there is an element of flexibility, which works both ways. If you ended up working more hours, I’d be happy to top the pocket money up accordingly. In addition, you will be given a train pass, which allows unlimited travel to and from York, which is an amazing vibrant city. We have had au pairs in the past and they have found good friends and managed to do a lot of travelling up and down the country while staying with us. If you want to improve your English, there are some free classes at York University. We have found having an au pair a really positive experience… it teaches us all new things about different countries, language and culture and hopefully we can help aid your experience of English improvement, confidence building and travel etc too. We are looking for someone with a sense of humour who is happy to muck in and is prepared to make the most of the opportunity in a different country.
