We're a great family with three kids, a Beagle dog and three cats living in Austin, TX. Our 13 year old boy likes football, lacrosse and is an amateur actor (IMDB Daniel Hay III); our 11 year old girl likes tumbling and cheer; our 7 year old boy likes computer games and going to the park - and he is on the autism spectrum. We're looking for someone who can deal with the periodic embarrassment of a special needs child. An autistic child looks "normal" so you don't know anything is wrong until they make a funny noise or start jumping up and down in excitement. People stare for a minute until they figure out he's a special needs kid and then they understand. We're really open about his autism so when he does something odd in public we just explain that he's autistic. People are always very nice as many know an autistic kid themselves.
The main task is to tend to our 7 year old kid with autism. He can be very low maintenance for many hours as he likes computer games and playing in the back yard. If he wants a snack or drink he will ask for it so the au pair's job is simply to help him out when he needs it. We also like for him to have a couple of hours of exercise per day so this would involve taking him to the park, mall, swimming pool, etc. This is where something embarrassing could happen but most parents in our neighborhood already know him. We would like to start out with three months to make sure there is a match for both you and us. If this works out we can extend for a year if you like. You will have your own room with a private entrance and it's own bath. We are a two minute walk to a bus stop and we're near downtown so the ride downtown is maybe 15 minutes. If you drive we have an extra car. We'll pay $200 / week for the first 3 months increasing to $250 if we extend (because there is less airfare cost).
