Personal introduction

We are a family of 3. My wife is a physician and I work in IT. Our son Jacob was born in March 2009. We live in a large apartment on the top floor of a building with 2 other apartments. The building is located on the side of a small hill and we enjoy a view across the entire valley. We live in a village of 200, just outside of Aachen, which has a population of 250000. The city centre of Aachen is less than 5 km away. We are also less than 5 km away from the Dutch and Belgian borders. So, if you want to learn about different European cultures, this is the opportunity for you. The large German cities of Cologne and Dusseldorf are both about 80 km away, Brussels is 150 km, Amsterdam 200 km, Paris & London 400 km. All easily accessible by train. You'll have your own room inside the apartment, equipped with TV, Internet access and a dedicated phone line. We are looking for good English speakers. Other than that, au pairs from all countries of origin and religions are welcome. Non-smokers only please. Honesty and reliability are also mandatory. Unless you are a citizen of an EU country or a citizen of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada or the US, your age has to be 18-24 and a A1 (basic) German language certificate is required to qualify for an au pair work visa to Germany. Check the Wikipedia article "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" for more information about A1 language proficiency.

The Au pair's job

You'll spend most on duty hours looking after our son Jacob. In addition to that, you might be asked to do some light housework that is related to Jacob in some form, for example clean up after him, prepare meals for him or wash his clothes. Of course, you are also responsible for cleaning your own room and clothes. Other than that, you will never be asked to do any kind of housework that is unrelated to Jacob or yourself. On duty hours are limited to 30 hours a week, normally organized into 6 hours a day Mondays to Fridays. However, since I (Frank) am currently away from home for long periods of time, you would occasionally be required to work nights and weekends when Michaela is on call in the hospital. You'll be compensated with extra days off. If you want to, you are welcome to attend German language classes in the morning while Jacob is visiting a day care centre. We expect you to communicate in English with Jacob while on duty. Off duty, you're welcome to communicate with the rest of the family in either English or German, whichever you prefer. You'll be entitled to 4 weeks of vacation over the course of the year. You're welcome to join us on family vacations at our expense, however, you're not obliged to do so.
