Personal introduction

We are looking for someone who loves children to join our family and to help look after our two daughters, Matilda (11) and Sophia (9). We live in a small village 20 km north of Lausanne, surrounded by nature, with a big vegetable garden and orchard, a few chickens and rabbits, and magnificent views to the French and Swiss Alps. There is reasonable public transport close to our village, but you would also have use of a car, both for transporting Matilda and Sophia to some of their activities, and for your own use. The village has several families with young children who often play with ours. Apart from being part of our family, you would have the opportunity of enjoying the rich cultural life of Lausanne and other cities near to us, as well as the serenity of life in a beautiful natural environment. John is a professor of biology at the University of Lausanne; Antje is a clinical psychologist at the University hospital of Lausanne. Matilda (11) and Sophia (9) are sociable and happy children who have loved spending time with our last au pairs (from Brazil, Romania, two from Spain, one from Hungary). Both children love skiing, swimming, running around outside, looking after animals, music, dancing, dressing up, crafts, playing with dolls, reading books, and having books read to them. They are both learning to play the piano and violin. We are a multilingual family and are raising our children in three languages: we speak English, German and French at home (John also speaks Spanish). John has triple nationalities (South African, Australian and British); Antje is German; the girls are British. Although we live in a quiet Swiss village, we have an international home, with friends frequently visiting from all over the world. We are almost completely vegetarian.

The Au pair's job

The most important thing for us is that you love children and enjoy spending time with them. Both children go to school, so you would have plenty of time to follow your own interests. We would expect you to contribute a little to running the household, sharing occasional housework with us, and occasional cooking. Our first and third au pairs shared most meals with us at our table when they were at home. The others claimed more private time of their own. We appreciate both ways of interacting and have found the shared life with all au pairs very enriching all round. We would encourage and support you to take language classes in Lausanne; this is also a good way to get to know other young people in the area. Both our au pairs quickly established a circle of friends in Lausanne and surrounds.
