We are a friendly and very active rural family with 3 cats, 2 rabbits 4 ducklings and plenty of chickens! Although we have 3 children, you would mostly be only looking after our youngest, Madeleine. Madeleine (8) loves to make dens, adores rabbits and chickens, enjoys trampolining and she is always lots of fun. Dominic (10) has an amazing imagination, very bright and loves to tell jokes. He is also autistic. He attends a residential special school Monday to Friday so you would not need to look after him other than the occasional babysitting. He’s just like many other 10 year olds and loves swimming, Lego, imaginative play and cats. Jack is a very self-reliant and friendly 16 year old who loves the outdoors, camping and archery. He will be starting college in September, and is pretty good at card tricks too. We currently have a fantastic Au Pair, Julia who has been with us since Sept 2017. She has found a good circle of friends and has a very active social life with other Au Pairs and also a local church group which many of the young people enjoy. We have all enjoyed having Julia here as part of the family, joining in our many activities and weekends away. Dad, Simon is an Astronomy teacher and works in many different schools and is sometimes away during the week. Mum, Jilly works 4 days a week as a Sustainability Consultant. Both of us travelled widely before having children. Our house is fairly large and modern and there is a stream in the back garden… the kids play for hours in it and in the trees nearby. We are quite nature-mad and like to identify butterflies, wild flowers and beetles. We all enjoy cycling and swimming regularly too. There are 3 cats who live with us also, as well as ducks, chickens and rabbits outside. There is a football field and tennis courts opposite, and a shop / church / pub and village hall just a few minutes walk away. Our village is quite friendly and we would hope to put you in touch with people your own age if you would like. Wellington is our nearest town and Exeter is our nearest city.
Hours will be approx. 7 – 9am and 3.30 – 6.30pm, 5 days a week with some flexibility of hours. Occasionally later babysitting may be required – up to twice in a week. Hours would rarely be more than 25 hours a week. Duties will include getting Madeleine ready for school, school drop off and pick up (a 10 minute walk), then preparing a simple childrens’ meal for Madeleine (who is vegetarian) and Jack (who most definitely is not!), listening to reading and helping with homework and encouraging the kids to be involved with some chores. Driving is not required and your weekends would be your own. We are really looking for someone who would enjoy being part of our family while learning about a new culture and becoming involved in village life. We would not expect you to help out with the children at weekends / holidays, but you’d be very welcome to join in family outings and weekends away. Some help with household chores is expected, but we have a cleaner once a week too. You would have a double room with a lovely view. I would ask that you only apply if you are really prepared to stay for 10-11 months as we don't want to change childcare too much - for Madeleine's sake. We hope by the end of this experience you would become our friend more than just an au-pair. Pocket money will be £85 pounds per week and you can take 2 weeks unpaid holiday over Christmas and Easter - further holidays can be negotiated. £400 bonus if you stay the full 11 months.
