We are a military family - my husband is just about to deploy on a 7 month tour and I run my own business working from home and need someone to help me out whilst he is away. We have two children, Harry and Martha, and a border terrier called Minnie. We live on a military base called Leuchars which is near St Andrews in Scotland. It's the most incredible place to live - we have a beautiful beach on our doorstep, St Andrews is a fabulous town with lots of shops, bars and restaurants, and Edinburgh is only an hour away by train. We are also on the main train line to London so it's easy to get to. Also if you wanted to get another job to earn a bit of extra cash in your free time there are plenty of opportunities for paid part time work in St Andrews.
It's fairly relaxed - the main thing is that because I work I need someone who can pick the children up from nursery and school and look after them until I come home - it won't be every day because I like to try and spend as much time with them as I can but if I have meetings and have to work away I need someone who can put them to bed. You would need to be able to drive as well as that's the only way to get around and their schools are a distance apart. During the day you would be pretty much free to do what you like - the odd dog walk when I'm not around to do it and the occasional bit of evening babysitting but I don't envisage it being more than once a week. I have a cleaner so no cleaning but i would like someone to cook their meals and help me with the odd bit of tidying. It's really important that we get someone who can have fun with the children and who they get on with - with their father away they need a bit of stability and someone they like and enjoy being with when I'm not around, that's the main reason I'm getting an au pair really. They're fairly easy children - they like going to the park, drawing, painting, doing jigsaws, making dens, playing with lego....that sort of thing. So finding someone who likes spending time with them and will have fun with them is really important to us.
