My experience as an au pair and live-in tutor began 30 years ago when I first arrived in New Zealand. I lived with a family of five children. In exchange for a room and meals, I cooked dinner for the family five days a week. I found this lifestyle ideal for learning the local culture while earning a living. Living with local families has allowed me to learn more than I would have at language schools or universities.
