I am Italian, and my husband Veit is Italian but his mother tongue is German. We live in a beautiful spa resort town called Merano, in the Italian Alps. Our apartment is located right in the heart of the pedestrian historic center. There is a gorgeous river running right through town with a promenade, walking trails leading up to a little waterfall, a spa and swimming pool complex, cafes, restaurants and shops – all just outside the front door. Even though it is a small town, Merano has a lot going on in every season: classical concerts, traditional South Tyrolean music and events, an international wine festival, steeplechase, harvest festival, chestnut festival, wonderful Christmas market, and of course hiking, sledding, skiing, mountain climbing and other outdoor sports. The climate is very dry and sunny with a lot of lush vegetation, apple orchards and vineyards – surrounded by the Dolomite Mountains. I am originally from Sardinia, an Italian very beautiful island, but lived in Rome for about 13 years (I graduated there and then worked as business consultant) before meeting Veit, in Shanghai/China, and moving then to Meran, in 2011. Veit is an international corporate lawyer and he lived in Shanghai for 5 years. We have one child: Josef, who is 2.5 and Teodor who is 4 months. I speak Italian to the kid, Veit speaks German, as we live in a bilingual German region of Italy, so we are looking for someone who is preferably German native speaker.
We would ask you to be available 5-6 hours per day, from Monday to Friday. You would have your single bedroom at our house and a private bathroom. We give you EUR 75 per week as spending money, plus full board of course. The four main things (all equally important) we expect from our au pair are: 1. That you LOVE YOUR JOB: Of course we know that you would be coming to live with us in order to have new experiences, learn a language, see the world and meet people. However, if you don’t love spending time with children and aren’t interested in their world or how they develop, please find another way to travel! There will be frustrating times, of course, and we are not saying that you have to be happy all the time, but a fundamental interest in children is crucial to us. 2. That you are RESPONSIBLE: We will be very clear about what we expect from you, and then we expect you to follow through without being reminded. Trusting someone to look after a little, very precious human being is a big deal for a parent. 3. That you are COMMUNICATIVE: We want to know what you need, how you are doing, how the kid is doing, any problems you or he is having, what developments you observe in him, etc. We will also let you know what we observe, what can be improved, what is working for us, and what isn’t. If we can talk through any problems that arise together, we can solve anything. We will respect your space, your time off, your personal needs.
