It is very important for parents to know if they need to call emergency services\u00a0when their children\u00a0are sick or if they can handle the situation themselves.<\/p>\n

We will present you the most common medical emergencies and how you should act.<\/p>\n

1. Respiratory Distress<\/strong> – your child\u00a0has difficulties breathing.
\nRespiratory distress is caused by choking, asthma, an infection, or pneumonia.<\/p>\n

The signs are: coughing, wheezing, labored breathing, grunting, inability to talk, or\u00a0turning blue.<\/p>\n

You must call emergency services if:<\/em><\/strong>
\n– the rate of breathing is greater than 50 to 60 breaths\/minute;
\n– your child is turning blue around the mouth;
\n– the situation is not improving.<\/p>\n

2. Broken Bones<\/strong>
\nThis is not life-threatening but you should take your child\u00a0to a hospital for evaluation.<\/p>\n

You must call emergency services:<\/em><\/strong>
\n– the injury is so bad and you can’t control the pain;
\n– the bone is sticking out of the skin;
\n– your child\u00a0has trauma to the head or neck;
\n– your child’s\u00a0consciousness is affected.<\/p>\n

3. Vomiting and or Diarrhea<\/strong>
\nIf your child\u00a0becomes dehydrated (sunken eyes, dry mucus membranes, abnormally low\u00a0amounts of urine), he\/she should be seen by the doctor.<\/p>\n

You must call emergency services:<\/em><\/strong>
\n– your child\u00a0is unresponsive;
\n– he\/she presents abdominal pain (this can be a sign of appendicitis or kidney\u00a0stones).<\/p>\n

4. Febrile Seizure<\/strong>
\nIf your child\u00a0has seizure, he\/she should be seen by a doctor.<\/p>\n

You must call emergency services if:<\/strong><\/em>
\n– the seizure doesn’t stop after three to five minutes;
\n– your child\u00a0has difficulties breathing;
\n– your child\u00a0is turning blue;
\n– your child doesn’t feel well\u00a0after the seizure.<\/p>\n

5. Falls<\/strong>
\nFalls are very dangerous because they can injure the head, spine, or internal organs.<\/p>\n

You must call emergency services if:<\/em><\/strong>
\n– your child\u00a0vomits more than once;
\n– he or she loses consciousness.
\n– the child complains of numbness or tingling.
\n– you suspect internal injuries.
\n– you suspect an injury to the neck or spine.<\/p>\n

6. Cuts\/Bleeding<\/strong>
\nIf your child\u00a0bleeds, you must apply pressure on the wound. If he\/she needs stitches,\u00a0you have to take him\/her to the doctor.<\/p>\n

You must call emergency services if:<\/em><\/strong>
\n– your child\u00a0has a bleeding disorder;
\n– you can’t stop the bleeding.<\/p>\n

7. Possible poisoning<\/strong>
\nIf you suspect a poisoning, you must call immediately Poison Control.<\/p>\n

You must call emergency services if:<\/strong><\/em>
\n– your child\u00a0is unresponsive;
\n– Poison Control advises it.<\/p>\n
